The U.S. government gives away 55,000 permanent residence permits (= Green Cards) in its annual "diversity visa lottery". Each year, the U.S. Department of State determines and announces the date for online registration and the date on which the Green Card winners will be drawn. In the following, we describe the participation rules and registration deadlines for the Green Card lottery.
The Green Card lottery registration period is determined by the U.S. Department of State each year. Usually, the official green card application takes place in the fall, i.e. between the beginning of October and the beginning of November.
The diversity visa lottery is open again for applicants: Registration for the DV-2023 Green Card lottery can officially begin on October 6, 2021.
DV stands for "Diversity Visa" and the number 2023 in the DV program represents the U.S. fiscal year, which begins October 1, 2022 and ends September 30, 2023. At the same time, this corresponds to the period in which the winners will receive their Green Card.
The drawing of the Green Card winners by the U.S. authorities normally takes place in spring of the following year. However, the exact date will be set each year in the same manner as the registration period.
This year, the pandemic did not affect the drawing of Green Card winners. The so-called Entrant Status Check for DV-2022 was regularly available from May. The results of the Green Card lottery were published by the U.S. Department of State on May 8, 2021.
Participation in the Green Card lottery means that if you win, you can emigrate to the United States. Anyone who wants to live and / or work permanently in the United States needs what is known as an immigrant visa, also known as a Green Card.
There are three ways to obtain a Green Card:
In particular, applicants who want to obtain a Green Card through the employer or through family reunification often have to meet very strict entry requirements and also face long waiting periods. A better option may therefore be to participate in the annual Green Card program. This is because a Green Card won in the lottery also gives you the unrestricted right to live and work permanently in the U.S. without being tied to a particular employer. Also, for people who do not qualify for a nonimmigrant visa (e.g. E or H-1B work visa), participation in the Green Card lottery is also an alternative, as registration for the lottery is subject to much lower entry requirements.
Green Card applications can be made either online at the U.S. Department of State website or through a specialized green card agency. In particular, emigration seekers who are unsure about the registration and process of the Green Card lottery in general can confidently contact our sister company The American Dream – US GreenCard Service, which specializes in the application and processing of GreenCards under the lottery.
