Citizenship as a global entry requirement

The Global Entry Program, administered by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, is reserved for individuals of certain nationalities and reduces border control wait times for members. The Global Entry Program is available to eligible travelers at major U.S. airports.

Global Entry is available to trusted nationals from

  • Argentina,
  • Brazil
  • Germany,
  • Great Britain,
  • India,
  • Colombia,
  • Mexico,
  • Panama,
  • of Switzerland,
  • Singapore,
  • South Korea,
  • the USA

as well as

  • US male and female immigrants (Lawful Permanent Residents) and
  • Canadian nationals participating in the NEXUS program,

available.

In 2017 alone, six new Global Entry countries were included. Since 2022, Brazil has also been one of the few participating countries. This means that even more travelers to the USA will be able to use the accelerated entry procedure with Global Entry.

The basic application for Global Entry is identical, only individual application steps differ depending on the Global Entry country. Depending on the nationality, further Global Entry requirements have to be fulfilled.

Global Entry Participation

Global Entry Registration

  1. Registration is first done online on the Trusted Traveler Program website. The registration fee is also due here.
  2. A country-specific security check is then required. As a rule, this background check is carried out by the state police authority. If this step is not done, the Global Entry application will not be processed further.
  3. The final enrollment step involves an in-person interview with a US Border Patrol agent.

Global Entry Validity and Costs

Global Entry membership is limited to several years. Depending on your Global Entry interview date and your date of birth, your Global Entry membership is valid for at least five yearsbut may also be valid almost six years after the date you were first admitted to Global Entry.
After expiration of the Global Entry membership, a renewed participation in the Global Entry Program is possible.

The application fee is 100 US Dollar. The fee will be due again in case of a Global Entry renewal.

Who is not allowed to participate in Global Entry?

There can be different reasons for a person to not be qualified for Global Entry, e.g. if

  • the Global Entry application is incomplete,
  • a criminal act has been committed,
  • there is a violation of the law or
  • the nationality is not eligible for Global Entry (e.g. Austria).
