Online courses are becoming increasingly popular – also among international students in the United States. These so-called Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC) are taught exclusively online and are usually offered free of charge.
An online or distance learning course, as defined in the regulations for international students, is a course that is offered primarily through the use of technology and does not require the physical presence of the student for instruction, examinations, or other purposes necessary for the completion of the course.
The web-based courses are also characterized by the fact that many students register for these courses; sometimes up to a thousand students or more are registered for a single online course.
Many universities, colleges and language schools in the US also offer online courses or distance learning, which students can use to earn credits. However, F-1 or M-1 visa holders should be careful when using online courses and distance learning, as there are strict guidelines for visa holders regarding courses that do not require physical attendance.
The requirements for full course of study must be adhered to at all times in order not to jeopardize the F-1 or M-1 status. According to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), which monitors compliance with the guidelines for F-1 and M-1 visas, the following regulations apply:
F-1 students may only transfer one online course or 3 credits per semester into their full-time degree program if the course is taken online or via distance learning.
However, students are free to take further online courses according to their interests as long as they are not included in the regular curriculum.
Online or distance learning courses cannot be credited for M-1 students or those taking English language courses.
Students with F-1 visas or M-1 visas should follow the guidelines regarding online courses and distance learning and, if necessary, consult with their educational institution or Designated School Official (DSO) in advance to determine which courses will be credited and whether the timetable meets the requirements.
Failure to comply with the guidelines usually results in the loss of legal residence status. This would result in the person having to leave the United States immediately.
We recommend that students always keep up to date with the current guidelines for F-1 and M-1 visas. Foreign students can find current information on the website Study in the States.
