The technical terms used in the visa process are very specialized. Listed below you will find the most commonly used visa terms with their meaning.

  • Re-entry Permit

    A re-entry permit is a travel document. It enables a Green Card holder to confirm his status as Permanent Resident or Conditional Resident
    - for long periods of absence outside the United States (more than one year), or
    - when taking up a new residence outside the United States (also in case of absence of less than one year)
    to maintain.

    A re-entry permit must be applied for using Form I-131 (Application for Travel Document) well in advance of the planned departure.
    The re-entry permit is issued by the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) and has a blue-green booklet similar to a U.S. passport.

  • Reciprocity Fee

    The Reciprocity Fee is an additional fee that may be charged when applying for a U.S. visa. The principle of governmental reciprocity applies here. This means that the U.S. will charge a Reciprocity Fee to citizens of a country for certain visa categories if the foreign government also charges fees to U.S. citizens for similar visa types.

  • RFE – Request for Evidence

    U.S. immigration officials who have questions or need clarification regarding who submitted petitions may send a letter or note to the applicant requesting additional information (= Request for Evidence). Applicants should reply in detail before the specified deadline, since failure to do so will result in the automatic rejection of the application.
